Problematic Images in Gap T-Shirts

“Gap’s website recently (2012) offered a black t-shirt with the words “Manifest Destiny” emblazoned on the front…Manifest Destiny” was the 19th century belief that the United States was destined to take over the world. Historians have said that the belief was used to justify the genocide of thousands of Native Americans.”

Who cares: Shirts like these rewrite history and make it cool to wear things that symbolize and quite literally destroyed peoples lives. Shirts like that make it seem like that was in the past and now genocide and assault on Native people(s) are over, when in reality it is not.Sixth College Video Production Club created the Racialization in the Media Lecture Series to challenge these sorts of images in the media, whether it be in movies, video game culture, music, or even t-shirts. We cannot change the world through these lectures, we cannot stop Gap from making these shirt’s buy by starting the conversation we not only educate people that things like Manifest Destiny are not dead, but also allow them to go out and make change!
